York River State Park

When I was in college, I focused a lot of my photography on capturing landscapes, which allowed me to explore new areas. I enjoy traveling, as each place offers unique sights and experiences. However, in the last few years, I took a break from photographing most things, which has been a noticeable absence in my life. Now, I am excited to start getting back into a groove by traveling more extensively and rediscovering my passion for photography.

I have lived in Virginia for four years now, and surprisingly, I haven’t photographed any of it yet. To change this, I am going to try to spend my spare time taking Kodak, my silver lab, along with me on hikes to various state parks in the area, allowing us both to enjoy these landscapes together.

I decided to take a trip to York River State Park to explore. There were a number of trails available to wander through, but the one I chose to focus on this particular day was the scenic trail leading to Fossil Beach. Although it was a little cold outside, which made for brisk walking conditions, the effect of the chilly air transformed the water washing onto the shore into a stunning scene where everything was completely covered in ice. It was actually quite beautiful to see. As you first enter the beach area, there are two distinct directions you can opt to go. If you go right, you can meander along the trail that runs parallel to the beach, enjoying the views of the icy water. Alternatively, if you choose to go left, you can immerse yourself in the “fossil” part of the beach, where a fascinating array of fossils covers the ground—pieces that you can pick up, examine, and admire.

Overall, this state park was a really cool and unique place to check out and explore. I am excited for the warmer weather to arrive so that I can take my kayak out there to fully enjoy the view from the water and it would be a good place to maybe have a picnic with friends or family. Enjoy some photographs of the area!
