Elementary Art: Salt and Watercolors

Hey Everyone! I am sorry I haven’t made a post in a while. I have been working on my own personal art BUT I have some projects I will post this week for you all to do with the kiddos. This project is interesting because the final result is very different than you would expect. Ask your kids what they think will happen if you add salt to your watercolor paintings. You could even start by having them paint with watercolor and while the paint is wet add salt just to see what it does. After it dries it will look very different! I added glue into the project to make the pattern/design stick better. I hope you all participate and let me know what you think!

Materials

These are the materials you will need to complete this project.

-Paper

-Watercolor Paint

-Paintbrush

-Liquid Glue

-Salt

Applying The Glue

When applying the glue, you should make your design. Sometimes when you put lines too close they will clump together. Be careful. You can use lines, shapes, patterns, ect. Be creative!

The Messy Part

If you get a container, you can put your paper in it so the salt doesn’t go everywhere.

Apply The Salt

For this step you want to pour salt all over the glue you applied. Shake your container around to make sure the salt is evenly applied to each glued spot.

Fully Covered

Make sure every part is covered!!!

Bring On The Watercolor

You will need a cup of water for your watercolor paint.

Wet Paint

Dip your paintbrush into the water then apply it to the paint.

Start Painting

Apply the watercolor to salted glue.

Try Different Colors!

Sometimes the colors will bleed over into one another. Focus on the primary and secondary colors mixing!

Finished Painting!

After you get your colors place somewhere to dry.

After It Dries..

It will become hard and almost look crystallized.
