I think it is important to find projects that don’t take many supplies. This project can be done with very few items. It might be a simple project but it is actually really fun to make. I think the final product turns out well for any age and it gets them thinking about what makes a pattern. I hope you enjoy!
These are the materials you will need.
-2 Sheets of Paper (two different colors)
-Glue Stick
-Scissors
-Black Marker or a Black Sharpie (Remember sharpies are permanent so be careful)
Take one sheet of paper and trace your hand.
This will leave you with an outline of your hand.
You want to cut around the line that you drew.
This is what you will be left with.
Put glue all over one side of that hand.
Glue it down to the other sheet of paper.
Use the black marker to make wavy lines going from one side of your paper to the other.
Now make some wavy lines going from the top of your paper to the bottom.
An outline according to Merriam-Webster is, “a line that marks the outer limits of an object or figure.” Artists use outlines to separate things in their picture. We want to outline around the hand to seperate it from the rest.
This is what you should have so far.
We have divided our image into a bunch of separate areas. Each area we need to fill with a pattern. A pattern is simply something the repeats over and over again. For this project you can talk about shapes and line. What are the different shapes? What are geometric shapes verses organic shapes? You can talk about the different types of lines. Straight lines, curvy lines, horizontal lines, diagonal lines, zigzags, dots that make lines, ect. There are many options.

You will start to bounce around and fill in different sections. It is starting to come together nicely.
Now you have a cool hand print created with patterns. I think there is something calming about creating these patterns while making this project. I hope you participate and enjoy!
